The tobacco industry is transforming radically, with innovation becoming essential to capture and grow new generations of consumers. Japan Tobacco International (JTI) introduced a new line of smoke-free products including Logic Compact Pro, a remarkably compact and intuitive device allowing users to charge, change flavours, and vape with just a click. As part of the creative team at Alkemy, I contributed to the digital campaign that introduced this innovative product to the Italian market.
Industry Context and Market Challenge
The shift towards reduced-risk tobacco alternatives represents one of the industry’s most significant transformations in decades. Traditional cigarette sales are declining as consumers seek potentially less harmful options, creating opportunities for innovative products like Logic Compact Pro.
However, launching smoke-free products in Italy presented substantial challenges. The market is strictly regulated, with extensive restrictions on advertising, promotional activities, and consumer communications. Our product launch campaign needed to generate excitement and awareness whilst navigating complex legal constraints that limit traditional marketing approaches.
Product Innovation and Positioning
Logic Compact Pro differentiated itself through exceptional simplicity and portability. Unlike complex vaping devices requiring technical knowledge, this product offered a streamlined experience: charge, click to change flavours, and vape. The all-in-one design eliminated the confusion and maintenance associated with multi-component systems.
This simplicity became central to our digital marketing strategy. We needed to communicate that Logic Compact Pro made transitioning to smoke-free alternatives effortless, appealing to consumers interested in innovation but intimidated by complicated vaping technology.
Campaign Strategy and Objectives
Our mission was creating a digital campaign to introduce Logic Compact Pro in the Italian market, generating maximum awareness and interest within the constraints of regulated market advertising. Traditional above-the-line advertising was largely prohibited, making digital channels our primary (and in many cases, only) avenue for reaching potential consumers.
The campaign needed to build anticipation before launch, educate consumers about the product’s benefits, and drive conversions through JTI’s authorized retail channels. Success would be measured by website traffic, engagement metrics, and ultimately, product trial rates amongst target demographics.
Digital Ecosystem Development
We created a comprehensive digital presence including a dedicated minisite, optimised landing page, and strategic interventions on JTI’s existing Italian website. Rather than starting from scratch, we enhanced an already well-executed international campaign, localising content for Italian cultural preferences and regulatory requirements.
The minisite design served as an immersive brand experience, showcasing Logic Compact Pro’s sleek industrial design through high-quality product photography and interactive demonstrations. Users could explore features, understand usage, and discover available flavours through an engaging, visually sophisticated interface.
User Experience and Visual Design
We prioritised creating an aesthetically compelling experience that reflected the product’s premium positioning and technological innovation. Clean, minimalist layouts emphasised the device’s simplicity whilst sophisticated animations and transitions conveyed modern sophistication.
The landing page was engineered for conversion, with clear calls-to-action guiding visitors towards retailer locators and product information. Every element (from typography to colour palette to interaction design) was calibrated to appeal to the target demographic of tech-savvy adults seeking alternatives to traditional cigarettes.
Mobile optimisation was critical, as research indicated that the target audience primarily consumed digital content via smartphones. The entire digital experience was designed mobile-first, ensuring flawless functionality and visual impact on smaller screens.
Navigating Regulatory Constraints
Working within Italy’s regulated tobacco market required meticulous attention to compliance. Every piece of copy, every visual element, and every interactive feature was reviewed to ensure adherence to advertising restrictions whilst maintaining campaign effectiveness.
We leveraged permitted channels strategically: focusing on information provision rather than promotional claims, educating rather than persuading, and emphasising harm reduction messaging where regulations allowed.
Results and Market Impact
The Logic Compact Pro digital campaign successfully introduced JTI’s innovative product to Italian consumers, generating significant awareness within the constraints of regulated market communications. The campaign demonstrated how thoughtful digital design and strategic content can effectively launch consumer products even in highly restricted advertising environments.
