50 years thinking about the future
The Industrial Engineering 50 years anniversary project commemorated five decades of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Chile. The Department of Industrial Engineering (DII in Spanish) was founded in 1965 and it is part of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Chile, which attracts some of the best students in the country.
The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Chile entrusted us with curating their entire project to commemorate the institution’s 50th anniversary.
Role and Creative Oversight
As the Creative Director, I oversaw every aspect of the creative process, production supervision, and quality assurance. I also wrote screenplays for video animations and reels, ensuring the narrative aligned with the project’s overarching vision.
The creative process required balancing institutional history with contemporary relevance, academic rigour with emotional resonance. Each element needed to speak to different audiences: alumni reflecting on their education, current students discovering the department’s legacy, and prospective students considering their future.
Logo and Corporate Identity
We crafted a distinctive and cohesive visual language that began with the special 50th anniversary logo. This logo was designed for versatile application, appearing co-branded across all materials throughout the campaign. The mark honoured the Department of Industrial Engineering’s heritage whilst projecting forward into its next 50 years.
The Department of Industrial Engineering was born from the integration of two units of the Faculty: the Planning Centre (CEPLA) and the Industrial Administration Centre, and our visual language honoured this heritage of integration.
The logo system extended across physical touchpoints and branding elements: roll banners at the celebration event, pins distributed to attendees, commemorative notebooks, leaflets, and general merchandising. Every piece carried this cohesive visual system, ensuring consistent brand presence across all anniversary communications.
Interactive Content Platform
A key highlight of the initiative was the development of a dedicated content platform. This interactive website showcased the department’s history and societal impact through engaging statistics and brief animations. These illustrated the influence of its research areas, including Marketing, Process Optimisation, Finance, Economics, and Operations.
The website was completely adaptive for desktop, mobile and tablet. In 2015, fully adaptive design across all three device categories was still emerging as standard practice, making this commitment to comprehensive responsive navigation particularly forward-thinking for an institutional website.
The platform told the story of the institution since its beginnings to nowadays with testimonials of the different directors it has had during those years. As evidenced by the number of scientific publications and the impact of the applied projects, the department is the leader in the country and recognised within Latin America. The website needed to communicate this leadership whilst telling human stories about how the department shaped Chile’s industrial and business landscape over five decades.
Audiovisual Production
Animations and video shooting were developed with our partners Draff.tv. We created a comprehensive series of audiovisual assets to celebrate the 50 years, including celebratory videos with testimonials, motion graphics explaining the areas of expertise and the story of the department, and an event redux video of the celebrations.
The celebratory videos featured testimonials from directors spanning the department’s 50-year history. Each director shared insights about the challenges and triumphs of their tenure, creating a narrative arc that showed institutional evolution whilst maintaining core values of excellence and innovation. The department has 41 academics who specialise in the fields of operations management, economics, marketing, finance, and data science, and our videos needed to honour this academic breadth whilst maintaining accessibility for broader audiences.
Motion graphics explained complex areas of expertise in accessible visual language. We transformed abstract concepts like operations management optimisation or financial modelling into engaging animations that demonstrated real-world impact. These videos served dual purposes: celebrating past achievements whilst attracting future students to these specialisations.
The event redux video captured the anniversary celebration, set to Vivaldi’s Gloria in Excelsis Deo. This classical music choice elevated the commemorative tone, connecting the gravitas of 50 years of academic excellence with the joy of celebration.
Comprehensive Campaign Impact
The complete campaign demonstrated how integrated creative direction creates lasting institutional impact. From the initial logo design through the interactive website to the final celebratory videos, every element reinforced the anniversary narrative whilst strengthening the department’s contemporary brand presence.
This comprehensive creative approach ensured that the 50th anniversary celebration wasn’t just a moment in time, but a strategic repositioning that honoured the past whilst energising the institution’s future.
