Caballos Negros

Creating confusion

Caballos Negros (in English “Black Horses”) was a single auto-produced by Jagüar, a Chilean rock band. The video was filmed during the recording sessions of their first EP at Audiomachine Studios in Santiago, 2014. In the early 21st century, many more independent artists have become increasingly popular in Chilean rock, whilst previous ones have consolidated generating a cultural legacy of wide variety and trajectory.

The Challenge: Zero Budget, Maximum Creativity

With no budget at all but a lot of creativity and good will, we were able to film and synchronise the session, and mount a clip, that ideally would work as a base for a more complex production.

The constraints were significant. No production budget meant no professional lighting, no dedicated crew beyond volunteers, no location fees, and no post-production budget. Yet these limitations forced creative solutions that gave the final video an authentic, raw energy perfectly aligned with the independent rock aesthetic.

Live Session Production Approach

It was filmed with four cameras live at Audiomachine Studios during the rehearsals of the recording session. This approach turned necessity into virtue. Rather than staging a traditional music video shoot with multiple takes and controlled conditions, we captured the band’s genuine rehearsal energy as they worked through their debut EP material.

Although frequently omitted from mass media preferring commercial foreign music instead, Chile has an extensive and rich rock culture, a permanent underground scene with hundreds of recognised bands. This video clip represents that underground ethos, prioritising authenticity and raw musical performance over polished production values.

Four-Camera Synchronisation

The four-camera setup required meticulous planning despite the no-budget constraints. Each camera needed to capture different angles (wide shot, close-ups on lead vocalist, guitarist close-ups, drummer perspective) to provide editing options. The synchronisation process involved aligning all four video feeds with the audio recording, ensuring seamless cuts between perspectives.

This guerrilla filmmaking approach created visual variety from minimal resources. By strategically placing cameras and carefully timing cuts during editing, we built dynamic visual storytelling that belied the production’s shoestring budget.

Post-Production and Editing

Mounting the clip meant assembling the four camera feeds into a coherent visual narrative that enhanced rather than distracted from the music. The editing rhythm followed the song’s energy, cutting between intimate close-ups during verses and wider shots during choruses to match the musical dynamics.

Colour grading was kept minimal and natural, embracing Audiomachine Studios’ authentic lighting rather than trying to artificially enhance it. This decision reinforced the video’s documentary feel, positioning viewers as privileged observers of the creative process behind Jagüar’s first EP.

Foundation for Future Production

The video “ideally would work as a base for a more complex production.” This strategic thinking transformed a budget constraint into a prototype. By capturing strong performance footage and establishing visual language for the song, the clip could later be enhanced with additional footage, effects, or narrative elements if resources became available.

This independent production approach demonstrates that compelling music videos don’t require massive budgets. They require vision, creativity, good will, and the ability to maximise whatever resources are available.

Chilean Rock Independence

The project embodies the spirit of Chilean independent rock, where musicians and filmmakers collaborate on passion projects despite commercial obstacles. The result is authentic visual content that connects with audiences precisely because it prioritises artistic vision over production polish.

In an era where polished content dominates social media, raw, authentic music videos like Caballos Negros stand out by offering genuine artistic expression rather than calculated commercial appeal.
